We built houses, villas, cabins, and hotels in Costa Rica, with concrete or a steel structure.
We do construction with a focus on sustainability, reusing almost all leftover materials, keeping the original trees on the property, using eco-friendly building materials, minimizing energy consumption during construction, and designing homes to optimize natural light and ventilation.
When you build a house with a concrete structure you have to make a larger foundation and require the drying of the components before proceeding. This increases execution times and labor, as well as machinery rental times, which translates into higher economic costs.
In dry construction with steel structure, very little cement is used: The drywall does not require the use of cement and the steel structure is light and requires less foundation. This is a remarkable saving given that cement is relatively expensive in Costa Rica. However, steel is also very expensive. So the material costs of a steel structure in a well-executed and reinforced steel structure usually exceed the material costs of a concrete structure.
Steel structures require less volume and surface area to support the same weight as concrete structures.
Leftover materials from a steel structure are easily reusable or recyclable. In addition, when the structure reaches the end of its useful life, in many cases it can be dismantled and part of the investment can be recovered. Houses with concrete structures will generate more debris and more pollution.
In general, steel structures require much more maintenance than concrete structures.
While concrete is very resistant, the steel structure is flammable and collapses at high temperatures.
The steel structure is more flexible and resistant to damage caused by earthquakes. This is a point to be taken into account given that this is a territory with a lot of geological activity.
